About Charles

CW4 Charles West was born in Edinburgh and spent three years in New Zealand
before moving to Shropshire in 1954 when his family were living at
Dorrington.

He went to School in Church Stretton and Shrewsbury and to University in Birmingham where he studied Medicine.

After working at the General Hospital in Birmingham he returned to Shropshire.

After working at Copthorne Hospital, Shrewsbury Dr West took over from his mother as GP in Church Stretton.

For five years he also worked as General Manager for Shropshire Health Authority, managing the ambulance and child health services as well as hospitals and community services for part of the County.

He was chair of a GP commissioning group and more recently headed up the Directorate of Stakeholder Relations at the NHS Information Authority.

He currently works part time in General Practice mostly in the Shrewsbury area.

Outside his NHS work, Charles West has chaired committees in the voluntary and charitable sector, set up a charitable trust and served as a trustee or member of a number of national committees.

Charles West is a member of South Shropshire District Council, a member of the Joint Health and Overview panel, Chair of Churches together in the Strettons and a Governor of the Retreat Hospital in York.
