Local GP to stand for Parliament

clip_image002Voters in Shrewsbury will have the chance vote for a local GP at the next general election.

Shrewsbury and Atcham Liberal Democrats have appointed Dr Charles West as their parliamentary Candidate.
“I have long felt that the Liberal Democrats had a sensible suite of policies that set out to make Britain a fairer and safer society,” said Dr West.

“I noted that the Liberal Democrats were the only national party to oppose the invasion of Iraq. But for me, as a doctor, I suppose that the NHS has to be one of the key issues. I am seriously concerned at the damage being done to the NHS by government policies of fragmentation and privatisation, and unless someone stands up for the NHS soon, we shall lose the local and trusted service that we have been used to.

On hearing of his appointment as Parliamentary Candidate for Shrewsbury Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats said  “I am delighted to welcome Charles West’s appointment as Parliamentary Candidate for Shrewsbury and Atcham. I know he has campaigned well and worked hard for the people of Shropshire and there is no doubt he will make an excellent MP for Shrewsbury.”

Heather Kidd Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Ludlow said “Charles will be a formidable candidate. I look forward to working with him on sensible policies for Shropshire. I am delighted that someone with real experience of life in Shropshire has been selected to fight for Shrewbury’s people.”

Charles West went to school in Shrewsbury and took over from his mother as a GP in Church Stretton in 1974. He has also worked in Hospital in Shrewsbury and for five years was a General Manager with Shropshire District Health Authority. More recently Dr West headed up the Directorate of Stakeholder Relations at the NHS Information Authority. He is currently practising part-time, mostly in Shrewsbury. Dr West is a member of South Shropshire District Council and chair of Ludlow Constituency Liberal Democrats.

  1. Col says:

Congratulations Charles – I know you will make a marvelous candidate.

  2. Andy Hinton says:

    Congratulations, Charles.
Sorry I couldn’t get to the hustings, but I wasn’t able to vote because I let my membership slip when it was up for renewal a few months back, before getting round to renewing it a couple of weeks later (disorganised or impoverished, you decide!). Consequently, I wasn’t a member for a continuous year, or whatever the rule is. But it looks like it didn’t matter.
Looking forward to helping with campaigning when I can.

  3. Charles West says:

Thanks Andy, one or two people got caught out by that rule. Never mind, I look forward to your help and support in the future. C.W.
