Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, has been named as the second target of the influential Power 2010 political Reform group. According to them he has been a consistent roadblock to political reform in the UK. The organisation is calling for fairer voting, more accountability in British politics and cleaner funding.
" Kawczynski voted against transparency on MPs’ financial interests, opposes reform of an unfair voting system, and would prefer a House of Lords of appointed cronies and wealthy donors to an elected chamber" according to Power 2010 co-ordinator Andy May.
The organisation is supported by the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust and many powerful UK organisations including the Electoral Reform Society, the New Economics Foundation, The Salvation Army, Actionaid, The National Pensioners Convention, Faithworks and Unlock Democracy.
The Parliamentary Candidate for the Liberal Democrats in Shrewsbury and Atcham, Dr Charles West said,
"Daniel’s record on these issues is appalling. At a time when the country is calling out for political change he has has been singled out at the one of the worst, a failing Member of Parliament in a failing democracy. This is exactly why I will stand against him at this election and win. The Liberal Democrats are way ahead of Daniel and the Conservative Party on the economy, on fair tax, on education and the community and on sorting out our corrupt political system once and for all.
"If you want to clean up politics a Labour vote is a wasted vote this time. Labour have wasted so many opportunities. They talked about electoral reform 13 years ago and then forgot about it until they thought that they were about to lose the election. You just have to look at the recent behaviour of Stephen Byers to see whether Labour really have the will to clean up politics.
"Over 100,000 people have voted for change in Power 2010 surveys and many will congregate in Shrewsbury to leaflet people in the area to warn them of the dangers of voting for Mr Kawczynski."
