Charles West went to the Priory Boys School in Shrewsbury and to Birmingham University. On returning to Shropshire he worked at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Shelton before entering general Practice. He has worked as a GP for thirty years and taught, examined and appraised other GPs. Dr West has managed health services in Shropshire and also advised the NHS nationally.

In politics Dr West has served as a district councillor, as chair of Ludlow Liberal Democrats and more recently of Shrewsbury and Atcham Liberal Democrats and as a member of a number of working groups and committees. He was the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for the Shrewsbury and Atcham constituency for the 2010 general election.

Charles West is a member of the Religious society of Friends (Quakers) and has served in a number of capacities locally, regionally and nationally.

He campaigns for justice, fairness and a free, comprehensive, co-ordinated, collaborative National Health Service.

He plays the flute and the saxophone and has two children and four grandchildren.
