Outside his NHS work, Charles West has chaired committees in the voluntary and charitable sector, set up charitable trusts related to healthcare and sports provision and served as a trustee or member of a number of national committees.
Charles West was a member of South Shropshire District Council, a member of the Joint Health and Overview and Scrutiny Panel, Chair of Churches Together in the Strettons and a Governor of the Retreat Hospital in York.
As a District Councillor Charles West steered the development of a new sports centre. He has surveyed public views on Sports and Leisure, housing, traffic issues and casinos, and campaigned to re-open a footpath, to retain a local skip for garden waste, to improve railway timetables and introduce travel discounts for young people.
